New website welcome video

With Quill Lake joining the parishes of Watson, Englefeld, and St. Gregor, it was necessary to do some re-vamping of the parish website (watsoncatholic.ca). Along with this came the need to create a new parish welcome video.

Here it is, in HD!
(720p version is below. It can also be seen in resolutions up to 1080p.)

One of the strange challenges was with the background music. I’m planning to use this music for a different video. And I didn’t want to re-use the same music as last time, in part because certain, national corporations saw fit to use the same, Apple Jam Pack music in nation-wide advertising campaigns, and so everyone’s heard it a lot. (Moxie’s, I’m looking at you, too. Surely you guys can afford to use other music beyond what’s provided in an $80 Jam Pack and leave that for us amateurs?)

So I’ve elected to use a couple of different pieces from the Jam Packs included with Logic Studio. The rest of the video was produced with Final Cut Pro X. Hope you enjoy it!

You need to watch this. [UPDATED]

Here is episode #6 of the groundbreaking, 10-part miniseries by Fr. Robert Barron and Word on FireCATHOLICISM!

If you are Catholic or interested in what the Catholic Church believes and teaches, you seriously need to watch this. The entire series is fantastic, and here is a particularly good episode.

If you live in the Englefeld area, we plan to show the entire series in the fall.

Episode #6: The Mystical Union of Christ and the Church

UPDATE from Brandon Vogt:

UPDATE:
Unfortunately, my friends at Word on Fire just called to say the video was prematurely uploaded. They were planning to release the entire episode along with brand new bonus content, but the video uploaded today included just the raw episode. So the video has been taken down, but the good news is that it will be live again sometime next week along with several extra features. Stay tuned!

As soon as I find out that the revised video is made available I’ll definitely be letting you know!

In the meantime, here is an extended trailer.

You just can’t make this stuff up. :-)

Ok, this is too funny. Or at least it seems that way to my frazzled brain during Holy Week. Youtube has a feature where it attempts to automatically create closed captioning for a video. I ran it on my parish website video, with hilarious results!

Here it is, somewhat adjusted for grammar purposes.

Bell TV Cuts off Salt+Light TV (?!?!?!??!!??!?!?!)

Since moving out to Watson, I have been using (and mostly enjoying) Bell TV over satellite. The PVR works great, the digital HD quality is superb (I’d say, even better than Shaw cable was in Saskatoon), and the channel choice has been great.

Until now.

I recently received this notice in the mail:

Effective April 19, 2012, the Salt and Light channel will no longer be part of the Bell TV channel lineup and you will no longer be charged the $2.50 monthly fee for this channel.

Salt and Light TV is a Canadian, Catholic channel which produces a lot of fantastic, original content and also broadcasts major Catholic events. For an example of what they do, check out the recently-released documentary, “Put Out Into The Deep”. I’ll certainly miss it from the lineup.

On Bell’s part, I’m not sure what the thinking is. They have so many redundant channels that I cannot imagine that bandwidth is the issue. I have, by my count, at least 3-4 each of the major US networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox) in high definition (HD). I have about the same number of each in standard definition (SD). I have two TSN HD feeds. Two each of the various regional Sportsnet feeds in HD. Discovery World HD appears twice, as does TLC HD and National Geographic HD. And, again, there are duplicates of almost all of this in SD. There is even a high definition channel that is dedicated to a freaking aquarium.

There is clearly ample bandwidth available on their satellite feed for a uniquely Canadian SD channel.

But if Catholics in Canada want a Canadian-produced network in SD that is loaded with Canadian content (hello, CRTC!), we can’t get it on Bell (or Shaw satellite, for that matter).

What’s up with that?

Bell, please do the right thing and restore Salt and Light TV!
